Sunday 12th July

12:56

This morning I got to have a lie-in!! Everyone else was up really early to trek up Bongkud Hill so that they could watch the sunrise, but the decision was made that I needed to save my energy. The others made sure to get a picture of themselves holding a very attractive photo of me, so I was kind of there...
Once they were back and we were all breakfasted and ready, we went to the community centre where we were taught to make banana cake according to a local recipe and held a competition as to which group could make the best one. (For a while it looked like my group were going to win, but unfortunately we were beaten). We did get to eat the cake afterwards though, which made up for it! After the baking session we made some more bracelets out of seeds, which was good fun, but very fiddly so quite frustrating at times (we all know patience is not my strong point...).
We headed back to camp for lunch - another big group has just arrived so it's beginning to get pretty busy here, but that's all part of the atmosphere.

7:50

In the afternoon we went back to the community centre again to take part in teaching English to some of the local children. They were aged between 7 and 12, so there was quite a range, and it was pretty much left up to us to decide what we wanted to teach them and how we wanted to go about it. We were told that although they had quite a good understanding of English, they couldn't speak much themselves, but it turned out that they were way more advanced than what we were expecting and already knew pretty much everything that we tried to teach them (including even obscure animals like aardvark and oyster?) so we worked a bit on trying to get them to put sentences together as whilst their vocabulary was very good, they found it harder to try and form whole sentences. After a while we let them have a break and played games like Duck Duck Goose with them, which they loved!
